Football is the most popular sport in Malaysia and has played an important role in fostering the spirit of nationalism since before the country achieved independence. The successful organisation of the Merdeka Tournament, which began in 1957, became a symbol of the sovereignty of the newly independent nation and served as a platform for introducing Malaysia to the international stage through sport.
In conjunction with the 2026 National Day Celebration, the Department of Museums Malaysia is organising the Bola Merdeka: An Inspiration Exhibition to showcase the history and development of football in Malaysia, as well as its connection to the formation of national identity, social unity and patriotic spirit.
The exhibition will revisit significant moments in Malaysian football history through a collection of artefacts, archival materials, documentation, photographs, audiovisual materials and interactive elements, providing visitors with a meaningful experience. The exhibition is also aligned with the aspirations of the Ministry of National Unity to strengthen unity through the appreciation of the nation’s history, heritage and culture.
