BACKGROUND

Royal Museum located at Old National Palace, Jalan Istana, Kuala Lumpur, is the residence of His Majesty the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and Her Majesty Raja Permaisuri Agong (1957-2011). After this period, the Old National Palace building was converted into a museum known as Royal Museum and was opened to public on 1st of February 2013 until now.

The Muzium Diraja building built since 1928 by a Chinese millionaire called Chan Wing as his mansion. The design of this double-storey building was the creative brainchild of a famous architectural firm in Singapore, Swan and MacLaren. The architecture of this building has a Palladian-style to reflect its opulence and grandeur that mansion. During the Japanese Occupation of Malaya, the building was use by the Japanese as their officers’’ quarters, before it was taken over by the British Military Administration (BMA) for use by the Royal Air Force after the end of World War 2.

Then, in 1950, the building was converted into a temporary palace for the Sultan of Selangor, the late Sultan Sir Hisamuddin Alam Shah Ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Alaiddin Sulaiman Shah until the expiration of the lease on February 1957. The building was eventually bought over by the Federal Government and turned into National Palace, the official of His Majesty The Yang di-Pertuan Agong and Her Majesty Raja Permaisuri Agong. As National Palace, the building has been modified several times and undergone massive extensions in the 1980s with the addition of the Balairong Seri for official ceremonies.
