The Music Museum is a museum dedicated to housing and showcasing collections of traditional and modern musical instruments, as well as the development of the nation’s musical arts. It was officially opened to visitors on 1 August 2015.
The establishment of the museum was driven by the awareness that Malaysia is a multicultural nation comprising Malays, Chinese, Indians, Orang Asli, the indigenous peoples of Sabah and Sarawak, and other communities, each enriched with their own unique rhythms and musical traditions.
The idea to establish the Music Museum was initiated by the Right Honourable Tun Abdullah bin Haji Ahmad Badawi, the 5th Prime Minister of Malaysia, in 2006. The museum is managed under the Department of Museums Malaysia.
This Music Museum is the first of its kind built in Malaysia. Its purpose is to highlight musical instruments made from various materials, categorized according to ethnic groups as well as musical instrument classifications such as Membranophones, Idiophones, Aerophones, and Chordophones.
